Update *new* Thank you to drum Master Saikou who led a one and a half hour drum circle in the foyer of the Martin Luther Church on Wednesday November 22, 2017. The participants, women and men from the neighbourhood, as well as members of the drum circle, were very grateful for the inspiring lesson, and the opportunity to find and try to beat to the rhythm of our hearts.
We look forward to our next meeting on Wednesday the 29th of November at 10:00 am. All are welcome. -The drum circle
Original post on November 14, 2017:
On Wednesday November 22 at 10:00 am, we will have a large group consisting of existing drum circle members and women from the neighborhood, learning together the art of drumming. Drum master Saikou will provide us with a 90 minute lesson. Come and join us!
The drum circle is also happy to report some recent developments. In the early spring of this year we applied for the ELCIC Women of Faith Fund to expand and to bring the healing power of drumming, from within the walls of the Martin Luther Church, into the neighbourhood. In May 2017 we received a grant of $2500. Since then we have offered drumming at the Party in the Park 2017, spent the regular Wednesday drum circle time, until the middle of October 2017, outside the church building on Lake Shore Blvd West to inspire passersby to enjoy the rhythm and participate. Jenny, our summer student, developed a program for teenagers to drum and grow to be implemented in the spring of next year.
The group has set a goal to perform for the first time during the World Day of Prayer Service 2018 on the first Friday in March. In the meantime, we are looking for a name as well as working on developing better relationships with women in shelters and in circles provided by Stonegate Ministry ( www.stonegateministry.ca ).
Keep the beat, – The drum circle
