SUMMARY:SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY - 10:15 am start for 11:00 am Bilingua
l German-English Service led by Iris Schweiger & Karin Schemeit. A Red Dre
 ss Journey.
DESCRIPTION:January 18\, 2026\, Second Sunday after Epiphany - 10:15 am sta
rt for 11:00 am Bilingual German-English Service led by Iris Schweiger &am
p\; Karin Schemeit (St. George's Lutheran Church).  We are going on a Red
Dress Journey. \n\n\n\nWe are going on a Red Dress Journey. This Sunday\
, you are invited to take some time for contemplation prior to the 11:00 a
m bilingual service. The doors will be open at 10:15 am for you to take so
me time to look at 4 art pieces at your leisure. A red dress will be promi
nently displayed in the sanctuary. We are hoping to give you the opportuni
ty to reflect on what you have not seen or heard before or might like to u
nderstand better. The display will stay up after the service as well. We w
ill be serving coffee and cake to give you more opportunities to share you
r experience.\n\nDuring the service we will ask God for wisdom and healing
as we invite you to look\, see\, hear and read what you might not know.\n
\nIt is difficult to know what you do not know. For many people who went t
hrough a Canadian school system\, what you might have learned about the Fi
rst Nations peoples was probably in history class. You likely learned of N
orth American encounters with European settlers\; how they were involved i
n various European conflicts that played out in North America\; maybe nota
ble leaders like Joseph Brant were mentioned\; or a little bit about their
way of life etc. But it was probably all taught as history. After that in
troduction\, history classes tended to focus on how Europeans settled and
developed the ‘empty land’ they ‘found’. It was as if the First Na
tions people had disappeared from Canada.\n\nIt is difficult to see what y
ou do not see. A federal department was created to manage “Indian Affair
s” so there was nothing that might have dealt with Indigenous issues at
a municipal or provincial level\; so nothing or very little would be in th
e news or talked about. This may have been one of the reasons why resident
ial schools and references to MMIWG2S+ were not in the public mind. Who kn
ew about them in the increasingly urban Canadian setting? The legacy of pa
st practices is that Indigenous peoples became invisible within our wider
society while their actual culture was misrepresented on television and in
other media.\n\nIt is difficult to hear what you cannot hear. We are at a
place now where we need to hear the stories of our Indigenous neighbours
in a way we have not heard them before.\n\nAll are welcome to gather in th
e foyer after the service.\n\n__________________________\n\nFrom home: Lis
