Join our team this summer

Last updated on Juni 19th, 2022

We are looking for two intrepid individuals to join our team this summer for 30 hours per week over 9 weeks at $15 per hour.

The Government of Canada funded these jobs through the Canada Summer Jobs program. You must be aged between 15 and 30 and be legally entitled to work in Canada. International students are not eligible.

Martin Luther Church (MLC) has established multiple food projects that engage the community with the overall goal of local food security, sustainability and affordability. In 2021, MLC planted a community garden for the first time in raised garden beds in front of their 5 Superior location, built a freely accessible community pantry, started an online project “Grow Some Good” as a chance to connect to neighbours during Covid times and has been running an outdoor soup kitchen “Bowls and Blessings” since the beginning of December 2020 and has just started a partnership with Bees for Peace to create pollinator gardens all around the premises of MLC. This project will be led by two University of Toronto students and will provide an additional element of working in cooperation with young team members.

Both successful applicants will join the community development team to foster presence, involvement, and relationships within our community. This involves organizing and offering various existing weekly activities like Bowls and Blessings. Both new team members will take on specific partnerships and portfolios to manage and a grow over the course of the season. In the past that has been work with The Compost Council of Canada and Plant-Grow-Share a Row, through the project “Give Peas a Chance”. This year we will continue our focus on caring for creation and encouraging community involvement through accessibility. Both participants will be introduced to the portfolio of partners and past projects. Understanding the community needs and priorities, we encourage each participant to offer new ideas.

Position 1: Community Development Worker
Supported by the food ministry team and community partners, this summer student would be tasked with planning layout and planting, tending, watering of raised beds for free community use. In addition, the labeling of plants, preferred usage and easy, affordable recipes to inspire neighbours to use fresh produce for cooking. Covid permitting, we would encourage and support the students to run outdoor education sessions from garden to kitchen. Short video recordings around all raised bed activities formerly mentioned would serve as material to post on social media platforms developed by MLC to promote home gardening “Grow Some Good”.

The summer student would also be responsible for painting and promoting the pantry, reporting to project contacts, community and church congregation regularly and provide reflection for weekly update. The student will be mostly focused on the implementation, preparatory work, day to day organizing, and follow-up review and reporting on the impact.

Position 2: Graphic Designer
The church is in the process of redesigning the interior building to better serve the community. For that purpose, outreach and informational material needs to be designed in consultation with our building committee. The student would also aid in filming short videos around all raised beds and food security projects to inspire the participation of our neighbours and social media community. The student will be mostly focused on graphic design and video filming and editing.
