Your Community Garden on our Superior Av raised beds – take some fresh vegetables
Last updated on October 1st, 2021
‘Your community garden’ in the raised beds on Superior Ave behind the church is a place where you can find a variety of plants and vegetables
The “Take Some, Share Some” – the motto this summer 2021 has been our universal message between the “Grow Some Good” and the “Your Community Pantry” projects.
Johnny and I, the MLC summer students, planted the seeds to all sorts of plants such as beets, tomatoes, chamomile, swiss chard, arugula, kale, chives, mint, lemon balm, carrots, marigold, and Chocolate Scorpion pepper. Also some broccoli and spinach – but they didn’t grow. We were helped and guided by some experienced gardeners – Catherine from LEGS- Lakeshore Environmental Gardening Society, http://legsetobicoke.ca/ and Iris Schweiger. They are our mentors.
The community garden was planted in July 2021 with seeds provided by the Compost Council of Canada (http://www.compost.org/).
The garden has been doing well! Johnny waters the plants every morning and I check on them for bugs and pests (slugs do in fact like kale; see photo.)
We also designed and put up the posters. Vicar Adam McComb helped us mount them on the raised beds. The posters look fabulous and grab people’s attention. I have noticed that people are helping themselves to things from the garden.
For Beverages and Blessings on Mondays and Fridays from 4 -5:30 pm, we use the chamomile, lemon balm and mint to prepare cool, fresh iced tea. We also harvest whatever vegetables are ready and give them out. I urge you to come by to the community garden and take what you fancy!
Sep 1, 2021 – The community garden has been going well, vegetables are growing and people are taking them. The garden has been flourishing and you should come by the community garden to take some fresh organic vegetables!
“Grow some Good” seed packets are also being taken by people. One person told me that she planted the seeds and they are growing really well and she had come back to take more seed packets. I planted seeds too and they are growing really well, especially the spinach! I posted my update about my plants on Instagram. Go check out our Instagram pages for updates and interesting posts @yoursundayfundaycyfm and @FabulousFridaysMimico. Share with us your updates and make sure to ask us your questions if you have any. We are glad to help out.
