Our “liturgical calendar” for the Sundays in any given year is from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) as adapted for use in evangelical lutheran worship in North America. We are currently in the Liturgical Calendar “Year B” which focuses on the Gospel of Mark. In each cycle of the Liturgical Calendar there are six seasons – each emphasizing a part of the life of Jesus: Advent: December 3, 2023 through December 23, 2023, Christmas: December 24, 2022 through January 6, 2024, Time after Epiphany: January 6, 2024 through February 11, 2024, Lent: Feb. 11, 2024 through March 28, 2024, The Three Days: March 28, 2024 through March 30, 2024, Easter: March 31, 2024 through May 19, 2024, Time after Pentecost: May 19, 2024 through November 24, 2024.

Pastor Annika Klappert has been the pastor at Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church in Toronto since August 15, 2021. She joined us after serving 2.5 years with a student congregation in Muenster. Her ministry includes pastoral care, worship services for all ages and stages, as well as events. She enjoys finding relevant ways to talk about faith, the Bible and our Christian tradition in everyday conversations and visits. Her calling stems from the conviction that our purpose in life is to be connected to God and to each other. She believes that a song can often be the best sermon and that training/mentoring volunteers in all fields of ministry should be at the heart of pastoral service today. When not busy at church, she stays in touch with family and friends around the globe, while enjoying the diverse culinary treats that Torontonian cuisine and her very own chef, husband Tim, have to offer.

Rev. Susan Johnson was elected as the fourth National Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) on June 27, 2007. Her ordination, consecration and installation ceremony was held at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 29, 2007. On July 12, 2019, Rev. Rev. Douglas Reble has been serving as Assistant to the Bishop of the Eastern Synod of the Evanglical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) for ten years after thirty years of serving as a parish pastor. His main synodical responsibilities are call processes, candidacy, interim ministry and shared ministries. Though he was raised with strong Lutheran roots in Hamilton, Ontario, as the son of an organist, and grandson and nephew of bishops he is as surprised as anyone that he ended up with a church vocation for he thought he never needed God, Jesus, or the church. Well, God has a sense of humour and showed him otherwise. The rest is history. “Love God and love people” is his personal mission statement. Those people include his wife and two sons and their families. Two granddaughters have him wrapped around their little fingers. – July 20, 2023

Rev. Adam Snook serves as an Assistant to the Bishop in the Eastern Synod of the Evanglical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC). His primary responsibilities are in the areas of Mission, Communications and Congregational Support. Adam was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and attended university at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia and Martin Luther University College, Waterloo, Ontario. A call to ministry is something that has been brewing in Adam’s life since he was a child – recalling time ‘playing church’ with an overturned hamper and a borrowed dish cloth. This calling was deepened through outdoor ministry, campus chaplaincy, and wonderfully supportive biological and faith families. Adam’s greatest joy in ministry is visiting congregations to participate in the ministry as it unfolds in local contexts. In life, he thoroughly enjoys traveling, and spending time with his son, Nate. – July 7, 2023
