The whole of the German-language program can be listened to live on CHLO Radio station AM 530, every Sunday from 8:00 – 11:30 am.
We follow the liturgical calendar – for the Sundays in any given year – from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) as adapted for use in evangelical lutheran worship in North America. In each cycle of the liturgical calendar there are six seasons – each emphasizing a part of the life of Jesus. We are in “Year A” which focuses on the Gospel of Matthew: The semi-continuous Old Testament readings focus on major Genesis narratives, the covenant with Moses, and the establishment of Israel in the Promised Land. The second, New Testament, readings are from Romans, Philippians and 1 Thessalonians. Pastor Annika Klappert has been the pastor at Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church in Toronto since August 15, 2021. Born in Heidelberg (Germany), she studied in Muenster and Berlin. before receiving pastoral training in Hamm, Westphalia. She joined us after serving 2.5 years with a student congregation in Muenster. Her ministry includes pastoral care, worship services for all ages and stages, as well as events. She enjoys finding relevant ways to talk about faith, the Bible and our Christian tradition in everyday conversations and visits. Her calling stems from the conviction that our purpose in life is to be connected to God and to each other. She believes that a song can often be the best sermon and that training/mentoring volunteers in all fields of ministry should be at the heart of pastoral service today. When not busy at church, she stays in touch with family and friends around the globe, while enjoying the diverse culinary treats that Torontonian cuisine and her very own chef, husband Tim, have to offer and caring for their baby.

Vicar Alice Rothgordt tended to the pastoral care needs of especially our German-speaking congregational members for the one year timeframe during which Pastor Annika Klappert was on maternity leave (August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025). Our congregation is grateful that Vicar Alice was interested in spending a year in Canada and was sent by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) starting on October 1, 2024.
Vicar Alice was born and raised in Hamburg (northern Germany) and studied theology in the city of Kiel and Hamburg while working after my studies in the Eastern part of Germany in a smaller city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for two years to get experience with practical pastoral training. She is deeply convinced that not only church services can strengthen faith, but also interpersonal encounters and being together with other people to discuss the existential topics and big questions of life. She has experienced it for herself, that God can show himself sometimes in the little things and not always necessarily when we are waiting for him or expect him to show his presence.

Pastor Dr. Gerhard Hille was the interim pastor at Martin Luther Church from December 2020 to August 2021. He visited the Martin Luther Church from Germany for the first time in 2002. He gave his first sermon at our church at the 2003 New Year’s service. Pastor Hille’s greater vision for our pandemic detour touched our spirits and filled our cups with hope, and we benefited from his hopeful vision which he expressed in his thoughtful sermons and calm leadership in our services.
