Join us in welcoming Nefeli Xiggos who will be our Intern at Martin Luther Church Toronto from May 13, 2022 to the end of June. Check out her stories on our Instagram account #lutheransbythelake

Hello everybody!
I’m 22 years old and I’m from a small town in northern Bavaria -Germany called Obermichelbach. Currently I’m studying theology in Erlangen in my ninth semester (fifth Year), which means that my studies are coming to an end.

I grew up helping everywhere I could in my church. Mostly I worked with children and accompanied them on their journey to confirmation. I really loved working once a week in the „Jungschar“, a group of children learning about God in a very playful manner. When I graduated from school I decided to get more involved in my local church and did a voluntary social year. After this time, I knew it was time for me to continue my educational journey and start university. So I explored different options. Coming to theology was actually not my first choice. I always thought I would end up studying something like social work or pedagogy, but when I went to a theological seminary for a weekend it kinda hit me. This is what I want to do. It was something I really enjoyed and something I could see myself in. Mostly because I really loved catching people at their own individual places in life and walking beside them for a while and helping them to find their relationship with God and themselves.

Besides going to university, I also took every opportunity to work on various projects, like tutoring an Ancient Hebrew course or guiding first-year student during their first weeks of university. Also I am heading the front office of our theological seminary, with a team of about 15 helpers. So as you can see, I really enjoy being around people, working on everything that seems interesting. I was also founding and leading a worship project during Covid called »Holy Day United«, if you’re interested in checking it out, it can be watched on YouTube.

Coming to the most important part: When I was starting to look around for my so called »Handlungsfeldpraktikum«, I really wanted to go to Canada. So I looked on the web page of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and had a look at every German-speaking community worldwide. From the first moment I saw your website, I knew I would like to work with you. The logo of your church just seems so alive and really attracted me. So I started looking around and was amazed by the things you do, the people you are presenting and I was sure I wanted to be a part of your journey for a few weeks. I would be happy to assist you in any way you would need me to and I look forward to seeing how a German-Canadian community works and believes. I also hope I’ll be able to help you with my skills, like social networking and worship or anything else you might need.
Much blessings! Nefeli.
