Thank you for walking with us! Holy Week 2026
Palm Sunday and Instalation of Church Council

Pastor Annika Klappert led an inspiring Palm Sunday service on March 29, 2026 to mark the beginning of Holy Week. Our church choir performed “Palmsonntagslied” under the direction of Linda Marcinkus as part of the prelude during the procession of this year’s church council into the church. The choir also sang “Jerusalem”. Some of those in attendance also participated in the service by reading the Gospel and Prayers of Intercession, as well as helping with Holy Communion. In the sermon Pastor Klappert connected the Gospel to her vision of the congregation as she sees it represented in the altar art.
She dismissed and blessed outgoing council members Mona Frantzke and Kai Herrmann (who continues in the role of Treasurer). She installed our 2026-2027 church council members: Jocelyn Sommerfeld as President, Monika Schmidt and Sonja Schweiger as Vice-Presidents, Tanya Zielke as Secretary, members at large: Greg Andre-Barrett, Andy Boettcher and Gisela Wilhelm. Philippe Daniel Koo Tze Mew joined the council but was not able to attend the installation. After the service, we enjoyed treats provided by Pastor Klappert and her husband Tim to celebrate our church council. We thank everyone who pitched in to help serve and clean up. We also launched our food drive which continues during Holy Week and Easter in support of our community food pantry and the Wesley Mimico United Church Food Bank. Please continue to bring non-perishable food and toiletries and make financial donations to support our food ministry.

Maundy Thursday Dinner Church
On April 2nd, 2026, we hosted our Maundy Thursday Dinner Church at 7:00pm, with 20 attendees. Everyone shared their favourite Easter or Holy Week traditions, and three candles were lit to honour the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We broke bread, and enjoyed a meatless meal of sandwiches, soup, vegetables, and fruit. After blessing our cups, we listened to a reflection from Pastor Annika Klappert about Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and an encouragement to care for one another. Meaningful prayers and songs were enjoyed by all.

Good Friday
On April 3rd, 2026, we hosted two Good Friday services, 9:30am in English and 11:00am in German, both with Holy Communion. A detailed Passion Gospel was read in four parts, describing Jesus’ suffering on the cross. Hymns sung by the choir were deeply felt by churchgoers, and many were thankful to have attended such meaningful services. Afterwards, non-persishable food items were added to our Food Pantry to support our neighbours, in lieu of Bowls and Blessings.

Marie Curtis Park Easter Sunrise Service
On April 5, 2026, we celebrated the risen Christ at 7:00 am during an Easter Sunrise Service at Marie Curtis Park, together with members of Alderwood United Church and other surrounding churches. Approximately 65 people gathered on the beach around the Easter Candle to sing hymns, affirm their baptism, and hear the good news! Thank you to those who came early to set up the fire that provided warmth before the service.

Easter Breakfast
After the Sunrise Service, about 30 people came back to Martin Luther Church to enjoy a hearty breakfast at 8:30am. The team prepared a feast of scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, turkey sausages, toast, fluffy pancakes and maple syrup, and a tasty fruit salad. Yogurt, clementines, and watermelon were welcome additions. A big thank you to everyone who helped with set-up and clean-up!

Easter Sunday Service at 11:00 am
The Easter festivities culminated in an 11:00 am German-English worship service, attended by approximately 75 people! Joyful hymns were sung by the choir, and Pastor Annika, Sonja, and Iris led a rendition of “Here Comes The Sun”. A creative sermon involved the participation of various audience members, who re-created the scene of Mary at the open tomb. Children and adults alike enjoyed an easter chocolate treat after the service! Thank you to Annette Rowles for decorating the altar so beautifully again this year.
