Carnival traditions. An invitation to have fun – Senior’s Group Wed Feb 11, 2026 at 11:00 am
Spring, summer, fall, winter and the “5th season”: Carnival. 20 congregation members and friends gathered to socialize and to learn about carnival celebrations in many cities across Europe, North- and South America. Pastor Annika Klappert spoke about the Christian foundations of these festivals. Gisela presented the Carnival traditions and history of eleven different cities, highlighting their similarities and differences. Music and songs, typical for the various cities, were played by Linda Marcinkus on the piano and over the loudspeaker, for listening and singing along to. Photos of the various cities were passed around.
We heard that for the people that celebrate carnival, it is an indispensable part of their culture and identity. The traditions foster a sense of community and strengthen social cohesion. Numerous social clubs associated, be it Karnevalsverein in Germany, Krewe in New Orleans or Samba Schools in Rio de Janeiro, work behind the scene year-round on a voluntary basis.
We enjoyed lunch and the “Berliner Pfannkuchen”, a round, deep-fried pastry filled with jam, traditionally eaten during carnival season in Germany. Thanks to Linda for entertaining with upbeat piano music, Annette Rowles for assembling the sandwiches, and all other volunteers for setting up and cleaning.

Seniors Gathering Feb 11, 2026
January 23, 2026 – We invite the Seniors of the congregation and their guests to meet in the week before Lent starts to learn about Carnival- what it has to do with the church, where in the world it is celebrated, and the different traditions associated with it. We will have cake (including Berliner Pfannkuchen), sandwiches, and drinks. The program will be in German and English.
