Last updated on May 27th, 2024

UPDATE:

Ascension Day greetings from Toronto on Thursday May 9, 2024! We welcomed around 25 participants from our church and partner churches (St. George’s Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church) to an Ascension Service in German.

It was a great opportunity to worship together and socialize. For lunch we enjoyed the delicious pea soup made by Tim, the husband of our pastor Annika Klappert. We served coffee, tea and cake with whipped cream! Many thanks to everyone who helped make the meeting “gemütlich“.

April 19, 2024 – We will celebrate our traditional German service for Ascension Day at 11:00 am Thursday May 9th, this year at Martin Luther Church. We welcome all German-speaking congregations in the GTA. We will gather in the church to sing and pray together and reflect upon the meaning of this special day, when Jesus finally said goodbye to his friends and left this earth to be with his father in eternity.

Afterwards we will meet for lunch, coffee and cake – cake donations are welcome!

Ascension Day celebrates Jesus’s return to Heaven. It is generally celebrated on a Thursday 40 days following Easter as, according to the Christian Bible, Jesus brought his apostles to the Mount of Olives, where he ascended back into Heaven forty days after his resurrection.

We celebrate Ascension Day to commemorate Jesus’s victory over death and his salvation of all those who believe in him and his exultation. It marks the end of the Easter celebration.

Ascension Day is one of the ecumenical celebrations shared by multiple denominations of Christian churches, ranking up there with the Passion and Pentecost.
