2022-08-07 Little Library unvieling

Martin Luther Church held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for our new Little Library on August 7, 2022 at 12 pm, after the 11 am church service. The ribbon cutting recognized the generous contributions that made the library possible and opened it up for community use.

The ceremony on Sunday began with some words from Dan Sommerfeld and Karen MacPherson. Dan described the process of the Little Library’s creation following Karen’s initial suggestion. The idea was proposed last fall but they held off construction until spring to ensure their work was not limited by the weather conditions. The library was built and completed this spring by John Naglic, Karen’s neighbour.

Dan suggested a bench be built to accompany and support the library. The bench has already been of great use to the community, offering a comfortable place to sit when Bowls and Blessings is serving food and during weekly drumming circles. Now, it will offer interested readers a place to sit while they read the books from the library! Dan also pointed out that the paint colours and cross design on the front of the library mirror the aesthetic on the front of Martin Luther Church. Karen followed with a few words on behalf of Wesley Mimico United Church.

As the torchbearer for the project, Karen was given the honour of undoing the ribbon to officially open the library to the congregation and community. The library was made possible by generous donations from our partners at Wesley Mimico United Church, the community, and the Martin Luther Church Council. We couldn’t have done it without them and greatly appreciate all the work that went into this little library.

The little library is located at the front entrance of the church on 2379 Lakeshore Blvd West and is open to anyone who is passing by. All are encouraged to give a book and take a book the next time they are in front of the church. All book donations are welcome, as long as they can fit within the library. We hope that users will help us to keep the library clean and organized, so it can remain functional for everyone. And lastly, if any would like to support our little library further, we are fundraising money to officially register it on the little library website and any amount would go a long way in helping us reach our goal! Donations can be sent to treasurer@martinluther.ca and all other inquiries can be sent to office@martinluther.ca.
